Questions

What exactly arrives?

A giclée print on canvas, gallery-wrapped on a 38 mm stretcher and ready to hang. Sizes: 30 × 45″ at $1,800, 40 × 60″ at $3,200. There is also a 24 × 36″ paper proof on Hahnemühle Photo Rag at $650. Nothing is hand-finished, signed or gilded.

Is the print sharp at that size?

Yes. Each painting is rebuilt to an 8000 × 12000 pixel master before printing, which is 266 dpi at 30 × 45″ and 200 dpi at 40 × 60″. A canvas is seen from across a room, where 100 dpi is already sharp.

Why is there no 48 × 72 inch canvas?

Our print lab does not make a canvas that large in this shape, so we do not sell one. The largest is 40 × 60 inches. When the lab adds a larger size, the site offers it.

What does an edition of twenty-five mean here?

Twenty-five of each painting, across every canvas size together. Each is numbered in the order the payments arrived, from 1/25 to 25/25, and struck through on the grid under the painting the day it sells. A refunded number is struck and marked retired; it is never sold again, so an edition can close at fewer than twenty-five. When all twenty-five are sold or retired, the checkout refuses the painting. The paper proof is an open edition.

How does the coin commission work?

You choose one to three letters and a year from 1800 to now. We strike them on a gold coin of our own design and set it into Interest, in the coin Magnus holds up. It costs the edition price plus $600 and is numbered outside the twenty-five, as C1, C2 and onward.

Where do you deliver, and what does it cost?

Delivery is included in the price, to United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Australia, New Zealand. Outside the United States the carrier may charge import duty on arrival. Canvases take two to three weeks from payment to door.

Can I return it?

An edition or a proof, yes, within fourteen days of delivery. A commission carries your monogram, so it cannot come back unless it arrives damaged, and a damaged canvas of any kind is replaced.

Who is Magnus Pye?

A magpie in a nightcap and a threadbare dressing gown who keeps his gold in a drained municipal lido and has never spent a coin. He is our own character; his nightcap comes from Dickens, and his habit comes from magpies.

How were the paintings made?

Each was rendered with an image model from a written brief we wrote for the series, then judged by eye against the character sheet and a measured exposure test. A render that looked like anyone else’s character was thrown away. The hand sketches of Magnus are still to be drawn, and we say so.

Can I buy now?

The pool opens to buyers shortly. Until then the checkout says the till is closed and takes nothing. Write to support@painted.app and we will tell you the day it opens.
